Maryland Tech Council Announces Rebranding of Biotech Division to Reflect Role, Contributions of Life Sciences Industry in Maryland
Maryland's Largest Tech and Biotech Trade Association to Rename Existing Biotech Division 'Maryland Life Sciences' as Organization Continues to Advocate for the State's Innovation Ecosystem
Gaithersburg, Maryland (June 5, 2018): The Maryland Tech Council, the state’s largest technology trade association supporting biotechnology and innovation in the state of Maryland, today announced that it has renamed its biotech division "Maryland Life Sciences" in order to highlight the Tech Council’s commitment to supporting the growing life sciences industry within the state.
The Maryland Tech Council comprises two major divisions: MDTech, which services the advanced technology community, and MdBio, servicing the biotechnology and life sciences community. In order to better reflect the important economic and business role that the life sciences community plays in the state of Maryland, MdBio will become Maryland Life Sciences. This change will help define the division’s specific focus, distinct from MdTech, and will highlight the unique interests and perspective of the life sciences community in Maryland.
The state of Maryland is home to more than 2,300 life sciences companies, which contribute nearly $18 billion to the state’s GDP. There are 34,000 Marylanders employed within the biotechnology industry, helping rank Maryland among the national leaders in state-wide innovation and entrepreneurship. These companies are committed to saving and securing lives – producing cutting-edge treatments and medicines that combat deadly diseases and improve the quality of life for patients across the state of Maryland and around the world.
“The Maryland Tech Council has been a champion and effective advocate for the state’s life sciences industry, fighting for policies that promote innovation and economic development while ensuring Annapolis understands the issues that impact thousands of companies and tens of thousands of Marylanders,” said Tami Howie, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council. “This undertaking will rebrand our internal organization to ensure it reflects the committed work the Tech Council is doing every day to help make Maryland a better place to live, raise a family, and run a business.”
Updated branding will help more effectively reflect the ongoing commitment of the Tech Council both to potential new members and among state leaders who look to the Tech Council for education and guidance on important, industry-specific issues. The Tech Council represents more than 450 technology and life sciences companies across the state, helping to grow, educate and develop individual businesses while ensuring that their collective voices are heard in Annapolis. The new brand was unveiled at the 2018 BIO International Convention in Boston, MA
