Intralytix enters into CRADA with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center

Columbia, Maryland, USA. June 8, 2020. Intralytix, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC SC) in Natick, Massachusetts. The CRADA will focus on developing a dehydration process for bacteriophage cocktails, for use as a non-chemical and environmentally friendly food safety intervention and mitigation strategy for bacterial pathogens in fresh military procured food items. Dr. Alexander Sulakvelidze, Executive Vice President of Intralytix, commented, “We are very pleased to expand our collaboration with CCDC Soldier Center and to work jointly on developing powdered versions of our bacteriophage preparations for food safety applications suitable for the US Army requirements and military logistics.” Dr. Sulakvelidze added, “This CRADA paves the way for an important R&D effort, and may help add to the arsenal of modern tools employed by the US Army for making the foods procured by the Department of Defense as healthy and safe for consumption as possible, using non-chemical, environmentally-friendly modalities.”

Bacteriophage biocontrol offers a very targeted, safe, and environmentally friendly approach for improving the safety of foods without affecting natural bacteria that are beneficial for maintaining a healthy gut. However, to make these bacteriophage preparations suitable for military logistics, there is a need to dry them, to reduce their weight and extend their shelf life without refrigeration. CCDC SC and Intralytix will be collaborating on this project, with the goal of making powdered phage preparations available for improving food safety and addressing the food safety logistics-associated needs of the US Military.
